Royer Farm Fresh Beef, Lamb and Pork is a family-owned Indiana farm that has been over 130 years in the making.  Nikki's great-great grandfather crossed the Wabash River and settled just outside of Clinton, Indiana back in 1874  on the 125 acres that we still farm today. 
Both Scott and I (Nikki) come from agricultural backgrounds.  Scott grew up showing sheep and attended Purdue University.  While at college he gained valuable animal husbandry experience working at both the university's cattle and sheep farms before graduating with a degree in Animal Science.  After graduation, he managed a feedmill making feed for cattle, sheep (including his own), hogs, chickens and even a few ostriches.  Scott also worked for a time with my Dad on the family farm before joining Pfizer as a research scientist.  
At Royer Farm Fresh Beef, Lamb and Pork our mission is to raise family-farm grown meats in a healthy and natural environment.  Providing delicious food for you and your family (and our family, too) is our full-time business and passion.  This is not a hobby for us, our farm has been in business for over a century and we are working diligently to build sustainable practices to last another 100 years and more.  It is of the utmost importance to us to treat our land, our animals, our community and our customers with respect and care.
Everything begins with the soil and it is a rewarding opportunity to leave the environment better than it was before.  We strive to optimize our farm with diversity of animals (cattle, sheep, hogs, chickens and wildlife) and plants (perennial pastures, grazing annuals, corn, beans, hay and cereal grains).  The synergy among a variety of animals, forages and forests makes the soil more vibrant and productive than traditional monoculture farming.
Our Philosophy
We are dedicated to raising our animals properly.  To us this means a clean, spacious, low-stress environment; a wholesome diet of primarily locally-grown feedstuffs; and feeding no hormones or antibiotics.  The cattle, sheep, hogs and chickens have plenty of room to roam getting sunshine, fresh air and exercise.  When we are caring for the animals we always treat them calmly to maintain a peaceful environment- no loud whooping cowboys here!  The cattle, sheep and chickens eat a medley of different forages.  They, along with the hogs, have access to locally-grown corn.  The vitamins and minerals, along with protein supplement for the sheep and hogs, are purchased from nearby feed dealers.
We have a strong commitment to our community.  We work with neighboring farmers to supply the hay, corn and straw we do not grow ourselves.  All our meat is cut and wrapped at three, small  family-owned butcher shops.  Scott volunteers for the local 4-H organization and county conservation board.  Nikki speaks to groups and youth about sustainable farming.

Our Story
My family was immersed in raising, breeding and showing purebred cattle breeding stock across the United States.  Living on a farm was not always an easy life, but a wonderful way to learn about the rewards of hard work and professionalism.  Scott and I met in 8th grade band, when he was assigned to teach me how to play saxophone.  I never did become anything more than a mediocre musician but a great friendship began.  I also attended Purdue University and majored in Biochemistry followed by a stint at University of Illinois for a master's degree in Muscle Biology.  I then joined a small pharmaceutical company as a sales rep.
Even before getting married in 1994, we were in the sheep business together traveling far and wide to gather our original flock of 20 ewes.  It was also during this time we had our first foray

into the meat business raising and selling beef one quarter at a time to friends and family.  In 2000,  we were shocked by the unexpected death of my Dad.  Scott took over primary management of the farm and eventually left his research position in 2001 to raise livestock and farm.  After the birth of our twin boys in 2004, I joined Scott full-time at home and on the farm in 2005.
We have a true commitment to continuing the legacy of the family farm.  With our previous experience marketing freezer beef and with the total lack of quality lamb meat available locally, it was logical to transition the business to one that brings food from our pastures to your plate.
The farm and our life is a family affair with Nikki's mom staffing the Terre Haute Farmers' Market booth (Aunt Gale and Uncle Rob also pitch-in) while my sister helps out in Indianapolis.  The boys' Grandpa Knotts is the official Mr. Fix-It while their Grandma babysits on those long market Saturdays.
